Tengo fe en Chile y en su destino
--Salvador Allende
My housemates and I walked to La Moneda today, things were much more tranquil than yesterday. There were arrangements of flowers set up and people gathered around the monument to Salvador Allende. There was a slight disturbence when some Pinochet supporters arrived yelling obscenities. They were chased down the street by a crowd until the police intervened.
I expect tonight to hear more news, a large march was stopped by the police earlier in the evening.
Here are some AP photos from the demonstrations yesterday.

9/11/1973
In 1973 a miltiary coup led by General Agusto Pinochete was held against the world's first democratically elected Marxist president Salvador Allende and the government of Chile. Countless deaths followed his. September 11 is recognized here as the day democracy died in Chile.
It may or may not suprise one to hear that the U.S. goverment heavily supported the terrorist takeover of the Chilean government in order to stifle the possible spread of the socialist movement in the Americas. Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger were well aware of, and possibly directly involved in, the military takeover.
Every year there are demonstrations in the streets. Today, September 10, there was a violent demonstration at La Moneda, the presidential palace. Many protestors threw rocks and molotov cocktails as the military sprayed crowds with fire hoses from armored cars. Tomorrow it is likely there will be more.
Never had I heard anything about the significance of this day before moving to Chile. I doubt that any high school in the United States includes these facts in the world history curriculum. Travelling has opened my eyes yet even more to the veil held in front of nearly all citizens of the United States of America, of the lies within which we live. Think not of 9/11 as a tragedy only for the United States. It was, on two occasions, an assault upon freedom for the entire world.
I am ready to resist by whatever means, even at the cost of my life, so that this may serve as a lesson to the ignominious history of those who use force, not reason.

And in regard to the more recent tragedy in New York, here is a charcoal drawing I made last summer.
